The POW/MIA Missing Man Table (Prisoner Of War/Missing In Action) symbolism as explained in a video courtesy of the United States Defense Intelligence Agency.
The Table and the items on it are meant to symbolize the fate of POW and MIA military personnel in a dignified and solemn way.
As of March 26, 2024 more than 84,000 American military personnel remain missing from World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, and other later conflicts involving the United States. World War I “The Great War” still has more than 4,400 American military personnel missing in action. POW/MIA records generally were not kept for the numerous conflicts before the first World War.
